FIRST FRIDAY RAMBLES

One found a good amount of new fabric art for the gallery walls on Friday. That is because the Alaska Fiber Festival is underway and several stores are featuring be employed in that medium. There were actually something referred to as the "Downtown Quilt Walk" underway.

Pieces that caught our eye and were apparently connected to the festival included those by Roxanne Stoner at Virtu, 400 W. 4th Ave. Pieces not apparently connected included hats and hangings by Lucy Zercher at Artrique, Ltd., 314 G. St. (I particularly liked the "Octopus" hanging.) Lucy's husband, Lowell, also had a specific thing hanging there, an image titled "He said, She said" that they  that is Lowell  said ended up made some years ago and featured the outlines in the faces of Bill and Hillary Clinton looking in different directions.

The highlight of the First Friday art walk was undoubtedly the opening of Sonya KelliherCombs' solo exhibit at Alaska Native Arts Foundation, about the corner of Sixth and E St. KelliherCombs' paintings, a continuation of her "Secrets" series, included several using transluscent walrus stomach being a canvas. The gallery is notable for spaceous and dignified display of latest work and also for selling a wellselected gang of craft pieces that largely cross in the arena of craft. Look over their mukluks to find out what i'm saying.

A little to the west, at Stephan Fine Arts, 600 W. 6th, I encountered prints by a Canadian artist who would be the next Rie Munoz. Nathalie Parenteau, who lives in Yukon, has an imaginative and colorful illustrative style, quite her own, redolant of northern mythology and everyday living.

The audience show at the International Gallery of recent Art, 427 D St., where members had 100 artworks coming in at $100 or less was obviously a clear success, moneywise. The majority from the $100 bargains ended up sold by 6:30 roughly.

Off the downtown stretch, Middle Way Cafe from the Northern Lights Mall were built with a number of large paintings by various artists; few labels were up while i stopped by early on.

Fine bigformat landscape photos by Dale Curtis Slaughter were on display at Kinley's, 3230 Seward Hwy. The artist was very happy to contain the restaurant's foyer for his display, since viewers wouldn't have to bend across tables to acquire a good look. On the other hand lamented the dim lighting from the hallway. Dale suggested I come back with a headlamp.
